Week 2: Cindy Sherman

Cindy Shermans earlier work

The Cindy Sherman Effect

Quote 1: “The art world was ready for something new, something beyond painting. A group of mostly women happened to be the ones to sort of take that on, partly because they felt excluded from the rest of the [male] art world, and thought, ‘Nobody is playing with photography. Let’s take that as our tool.’” (Sherman 16).

Quote 2: “She was the first woman who empowered women at the time. Being a woman is an identity problem. We are all every single one of those women that Cindy created.” (Doring-Baez 26).

Response: One thing I noticed with Cindy Sherman is she is a part of the role in art that brings power back to woman who feel they can't make it into the art world because they don't fit the category of "traditional artists". Her art work pushes others to step outside the box and challenge the social norms of our society.

New York Times | The Ugly Beauty of Cindy Sherman

Quote 1: "She uses herself because it’s simpler, she says. She can push herself harder than any model, and she can avoid small talk." (Sherman 7)

Quote 2: “I felt like this straggler that was running after them, saying: ‘Hey, remember me?’ ” she said in a later interview. “ ‘Don’t forget about me!’(Sherman 12).

Response: After reading into Sherman's life I can more understand why her work is so unique and almost creepy in a way. She was basically an only child in her eyes. Her work is like a cry to be seen because growing up she felt like she was an outcast. Therefore shed rather just work by herself becausethats what she's used to.
