Week #2 Cindy Sherman

Untitled

The Cindy Sherman Effect by Phoebe Hoban for ArtNews

“I still like the idea of challenging myself through the more hands-on methods, only because I think it’s more challenging when you are limited,” Sherman says.
I really like this statement by Sherman because she suggests a preference for hands-on learning and problem solving, especially when faced with limitations. She believes that pushing oneself to solve issues and develop skills can enhance learning by requiring creative approaches. We all can relate to this statement because when we challenge ourselves we come up with creative solutions/ideas.

“She was the first woman who empowered women at the time. Being a woman is an identity problem. We are all every single one of those women that Cindy created.”
I really love this quote because Cindy's artwork shares lots of different looks/characteristics of women. I like this quote because it emphasizes the view of women as "identity problems," emphasizing their historical struggles and difficulties related to gender identity.which means that women share the experiences and challenges shown in Cindy's artwork.

New York Times | The Ugly Beauty of Cindy Sherman

“The longer I look at these photographs, the less sure I am of them. Are these women insisting on being seen or are they taunting us, mischievously playing on fears of female ugliness, of becoming old and absurd or just invisible?”
By reading this quote, I am sure most/all of us can relate because most of us are worried about how we are going to look when we get older. All of us really care about beauty and physical appearance and that's why most of us spend lots of money on skincare, in addition to the new filter on social media that predicts how you're going to look when you get old. These photographs inspire a wide range of feelings and thoughts, allowing viewers to examine their own biases and perceptions on women, aging and beauty.

“The photographs are not self-portraits, nor do they depict her fantasies. She uses herself because it's simpler, she says. She can push herself harder than any model, and she can avoid small talk”.
I really like how she challenged herself for simplicity and independence to be creative. However, there’s some questions that I wanted to ask such as: Did she use herself to avoid small talk? Does that mean she doesn’t need social interactions? Is using herself simplifies that she doesn’t need to work with other models?
