Week 2: Cindy Sherman

This is just genius. I have heard multiple times that "art should make you think" and that generally there is a meaning behind all art pieces, but the fact that Cindy does not tell us the meaning of her art makes it even more intriguing for the public. The more people talk about her art, the more ideas and feelings can arise –some that might even make Cindy Sherman reflective.

"She can push herself harder than any model, and she can avoid small talk."

I picked this quote because it resonated with me and my struggle to deal with people who can't completely focus on the work they are doing. I also hate small talk as it makes me truly angry when people do not mean what they say. I can see Cindy Sherman being like this and I can tell those traits reflect in her art. She is the one who executes her own idea, so we are sure to always have the best representation of herself. 

The Cindy Sherman Effect Quotes:

"What has she herself discovered through her work? “I think it has made me realize that we’ve all chosen who we are in terms of how we want the world to see us,” she says."

This quote stood out to me because I completely agree that it is up to us to determine how we are going to be seen. We can shape our own image and portray something completely different from reality. The way we are perceived is completely up to us.

"Says Frajndlich, “What Cindy did, starting with the ‘Film Stills,’ is she realized the degree to which the stills used to promote cinema influenced the way people portrayed themselves, and she saw it as pure theater."

Cindy Sherman and theatrical pictures should be made synonyms. The way Cindy is capable in numerous moments to capture that theatrical energy in a picture is incredible. Pictures are in theory static, but she gives them life and movement. Looking at her work is like watching a character.
