Week 7

John Berger:Ways of Seeing Chapter 1

Quote: Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes it can speak; But there is also another sense in which seeing comes before words.

Response: A very true statement. We see before we can articulate what is being seen.

Quote: We never look at just one thing; we are always looking at the relation between things and ourselves. Our vision is continually active. continually moving, continually hold things in a circle around itself, constituting what is present to us as we are.

Response: We are always looking. There is a saying the eyes are the window to the soul. When we see things we try to connect to it in some way.

Kahn Academy

Quote: It often forces us to think about issues in a way that can be disturbing and uncomfortable, but it can also makes us laugh by calling attention to the absurdities in life.

Response: We are so uncomfortable with the unknown but we are curious beings as well. We want to leave but curiosity wins every time. We laugh to hide the curiosity within.

Quote: Performance art differs from tradition theater in its rejection of a clear narrative, use of random or chance-based structures, and direct appeal to the audience.

Response: Performance art to me is like improv class. Don't know what its about but its a more go with the flow kind of art

Yoko Ono

Quote 1: Even though she was frequently criticized and even ostracized by the press and the public, she fought her way through all the hardships with her creativity and challenging artwork.

Response: As a minority life is hard but to be a woman it's even harder. But the more we as women push against the grain more and more, we would reap the benefits.

Quote: Even at her early age, her work was considered as too radical by many, so it did not receive much recognition and acceptance.

Response: When it comes to women in the art world, everything seems too be to radical. Women are view as damsels in distress. Time and time again women have to prove we are not as soft and weak. Her work is only radical because no one was ready for her and how she expressed herself.
