"Me Being Me" Self Portrait Project

"Me Being Me"

Frida Kahlo portrait of pain
I choose this picture because of my background color is red
and I kind of having the same look

The materials that I used in this project are markers, crayons, scissors, printer papers, and glue. My project is inspired by Frida Kahlo, Wangechi Mutu, Mickalene Thomas and Hannah Hoch. However, Frida Kahlo especially is my main character in this project. Color red in the background represents strength, action, or even passion. My project is based on a self goal which is to help and work on my weakness and be fearless. I am an immigrant and I came to the United States when I was 13 years old and that old version of me doesn’t exist anymore, it’s a whole different person. I used to have lots of friends in my country and I was the shyest person in the group and I wasn't brave as they are. For example, I used to be afraid of heights, getting to know people, and or fight for my own rights. My personality was so weak that I couldn’t even make my own decisions. When I left them and came to the United States, I was asking myself lots of questions: are those new people/friends going to accept me the way I am or not. When I started going to school, lots of people were trying to get to know me but they couldn't because of the language and I was 13. I couldn't really learn the language as fast as my little brother. However, what I expected happened, some people started to laugh at me for not knowing how to speak.I decided to not depend only on school and improve myself and set a goal that by the end of the year I should at least start to communicate with others. I used to spend lots of time in the library reading books, watching movies to improve my accent, and used to do most of the assignments by myself with no help from others. One quote that I really liked from Frida Khalo’s reading is “People have described her as broken and fragile, but she was strong and accomplished a tremendous amount in her lifetime”. I can relate to this quote because lots of people said that I couldn’t do it but I achieved it. On the other hand, my personality was weak. I was kind with everybody but sometimes kindness doesn’t get you anywhere. It's basically letting others take advantage of you. From there I decided to change myself. I watched videos about “educating yourself” and bought lots of books on how to be strong and change yourself from being weak to being fearless. I took it seriously. Those books really helped me a lot to who I am right now. “People have an insatiable curiosity with her, and this presentation is a rare opportunity to see how she built her identity”. This quote was my favorite because others noticed a huge change in my personality. I built up my own personality to become who I am right now, self improvement in personal growth. Another quote “But Kahlo did not conceal her pain, revealing her casts and leather braces with metal buckles in her work and turning her plaster corsets into art with elaborate designs of flowers, even a hammer and sickle” .I really like this quote as well because it reflects of her physical pain as seen in some of her artwork and she transform them into a very powerful symbols which I can relate to it.
