Weekly Selfie #4 - Photo Series

Happy/Enthusiasm

Sad/Loneliness

Overwhelming/Anxious

Anticipation/ Reflecting on Life

The series I decided to create is about my emotions from the last week during the school day. The title of my photo series is "My Emotions as a Senior in College" My mood kept changing over the last week: one day I was so happy, the next day I was sad, and so on. I think my series is inspired by Carrie Mae Weems. As a black person, I think she went through all these emotions to get to where she is right now. "Weems’s black-and-white photographs are like mirrors, each reflecting a collective experience: how selfhood shifts through the passage of time; the sudden distance between people, both passable and impassable; the roles that women accumulate and oscillate between; how life emanates from the small space we occupy in the world." By capturing the past, black-and-white photographs allow us to reflect on how things have changed, how our own experiences have shaped us, and how our relationships have changed over time. They evoke a sense of nostalgia, allowing us to remember the past and reflect on how the present differs from the past. "The way we see things is affected by what we know or what we believe (page 8)." This quote comes from the book "Ways of Seeing" by John Berger, chapter 2.
"She uses herself because it's simpler, she says. She can push herself harder than any model, and she can avoid small talk."
