WEEK ONE 9/13

Me, Myself, and I - Josue Guzman

Susan Sontag

Quote 1: “To photograph is to appropriate the thing photographed. It means putting oneself into a certain relation to the world that feels like knowledge -- and, therefore, like power.”
Response: This quote from Susan Sontag suggests that photography isn't just about capturing the perfect image. Photography is an act of control and understanding. It allows one to possess and interpret what’s captured, granting a sense of knowledge and influence over the subject, which is similar to having power.
Quote 2: “A photograph passes for incontrovertible proof that a given thing happened. The picture may distort; but there is always a presumption that something exists, or did exist, which is like what's in the picture”
Response: This quote from Susan Sontag suggests that photography helps prove that any crazy unbelievable event has occurred. Even if it is tampered with, it can serve as evidence whenever anyone questions the word on any event that has occurred that sounds impossible.

Revisiting Carrie Mae Weems’s Landmark “Kitchen Table Series”

Quote 1: “I think that most work that’s made by Black artists is considered to be about Blackness. Unlike work that’s made by white artists, which is assumed to be universal at its core.”
Response: This quote talks about a very common racial bias in art interpretation. It explains that Black artists are often stereotyped as only making art about Black experiences, while white artists' art is seen as universally relevant. This reveals a double standard, that race can influence the interpretation of artistic expression.
Quote 2: “Carrying a tremendous burden, she is a Black woman leading me through the trauma of history. “
Response: This quote explains that the muse figure is a leader for all women. The muse is portrayed as a Black woman which carries a huge burden that allows women to view her history through her eyes and body.

NY Times: How Carrie Mae Weems Rewrote the Rules of Image-Making

Quote 1: "A camera has become more than just a journalistic or artistic tool, but a kind of weapon itself - one that reveals the truth."
Response: This quote explains that a camera has become more than a tool for journalism or art. It can now be used as a powerful weapon that is used to expose the truth, shedding light on reality and serving as a means to reveal and document unvarnished facts.
Quote 2: “Men put me down as the best woman painter. I think I’m one of the best painters.”
Response: According to this quote, men consider Carrie Weems the best female artist rather than simply saying she is a good painter. It illustrates how misogyny is common among men in the art community, which is ultimately bad. Whether you're a woman or a man, everyone's work deserves the same classification and evaluation.
