Sittin' Up in My Room
I have titled my series "Sittin' Up in My
Room," drawing inspiration from Carrie Mae Weems's "Kitchen Table
Series." Carrie once stated, "Life unfolds like a story, with each
scene reflecting our experiences and relationships."
Through this series of photographs, I offer you, my
audience, the opportunity to share the moments I experienced while in my room
during various moments of my life stages. These moments include my weekend
mornings, dealing with my first experience of getting COVID-19, the pressures
of impending assignments, and my moments of spiritual reflection, such as
praying and Bible reading.
This series captures the unique chapters of my life
within the comfort of my room, a place where I spend a significant amount of
time. Each photograph captures a distinct moment in my life, collectively
narrating my personal story.
"Humankind lingers unregenerately in
Plato's cave, still reveling, its age-old habit, in mere images of the truth.”
This quote resonates with my preference for spending a significant amount of
time in my room. It draws a parallel between this liking and the tendency of
humankind to become comfortably confirmed in their own personal realms like the
individuals in Plato's cave fixated on shadows. Just as I prefer the comfort of
my room over socializing with others.
In my photo series, I hope to communicate the sense of
contentment and sincerity that I find within the limits of my room. This series
depicts the idea that everyone has their own metaphorical "cave,"
whether it's a real location like a room or an inner sanctuary where they feel
most at ease. It is in these moments that I want to bring to light the profound
beauty that lies beneath the surface of my life, even if it might
seem to some people on the outside as ordinary photographs.
“A single person's story can resonate with
people from all walks of life.”
This quote really speaks to what I'm trying to convey
through my entire photo series. Even though the pictures are snapshots of my
personal experiences and moments in my room, I believe they hold something
universal. It's like, when people see these photos, they might connect with the
emotions and experiences I'm capturing, even if they're from completely
different walks of life.
My hope is that a single person's story, which is
essentially what my series is about, can resonate with someone. It's like
saying, "Hey, we might have different lives, but we share these common
threads of solitude, reflection, and growth." So, through my photos, I'm
aiming to create this bridge where people can relate and find a piece of
themselves in my story.
