Week 5

 Frida Kahlo

“People have an insatiable curiosity with her, and this presentation is a rare opportunity to see how she built her identity,”

Frida was somebody you had the curiosity to understand, and I feel that her art wasn’t the best way to do it. So many statement pieces and details, almost weird artwork. You needed a background to her story to understand what was really going on. And I feel that happens in society, people think they know from what you show or the way you act but they don’t what makes you show that side or why you act in certain ways.

“Photomontage could be used not merely to produce things heavy with political meaning . . . but . . . one could also regard it as a means of self-expression and eventually arrive at purely aesthetic works.”

Photomontage is a versatile artistic medium that can be harnessed for both making powerful political statements and for self-expression and aesthetic appreciation. It doesn't have to be limited to one purpose; it can serve multiple artistic and expressive goals. It has different dimensions. By manipulating images and creating montages, artists can explore their own creativity and individuality. They can craft visually striking and aesthetically pleasing works of art purely for the sake of visual beauty. In this sense, photomontage isn't limited to political or social commentary; it can be a form of art for art's sake, producing images that are captivating and engaging on a purely aesthetic level.

“People have described her as broken and fragile, but she was strong and accomplished a tremendous amount in her lifetime.”

Frida possessed an inner strength that helped her face challenges, adversity, or personal struggles with resilience and determination. It implies that her character and resolve were far from weak. Not only was she strong in character, but she also achieved significant and noteworthy accomplishments during her life. These accomplishments could be in various domains, such as career, personal growth, community service, or any other area where she made a positive impact.
