Mirzoeff: How to See the World
Quote: Each selfie is a performance of a person as they hope to be seen by others.
Response: I hate the fact that we as people are so dependent on how people see us. But when performing for "strangers" has become a norm for us. We stop thinking about how we see ourselves and if we like who we are.
Wangechi Mutu: Artnews
Quote:Tutu often incorporates cliched depictions of Africans. which admittedly add visual intrigue, as a way to subvert the persistent misrepresentation of Africa.
Response: Her work intrigues me to know more of her thought process as she is making these pieces. I think the fact that she was born and grew up in Africa her world view is different from my point of view. But I like that I can relate to her pieces.
Frida Kahlo: NY Times
Quote: If you look at her images. she always had a perfect manicure. Ms. Small pointed out that Kahlo "carefully groomed her unibrow"
Response: Frieda didn't care. I think that is what I like about her the most. When I was younger and saw Frieda I thought it was weird that she had a unibrow and thought "why can't she shave her eyebrows to look normal" But as an adult I can appreciate her confidence and how she pushed against the "norm".
