In the world of contemporary art, self-representation and the exploration of identity have emerged as powerful themes. Artists like Cindy Sherman, Carrie Mae Weems, and Ana Mendieta have paved the way for a new generation of creators to delve into these topics, reshaping the way we perceive ourselves and others. As I embark on my own photographic journey, their words and works resonate deeply, inspiring me to explore the concept of self in a world inundated with distractions and external influences.

Cindy Sherman's quote, "I think it has made me realize that we’ve all chosen who we are in terms of how we want the world to see us," serves as a guiding light for my project. Sherman's groundbreaking photography, where she transforms herself into various characters, challenges the conventional notions of identity and self-presentation. It has made me reflect on the role of personal choice in shaping our identity, especially in an age dominated by social media and curated online personas. My project aims to capture the essence of these choices, exploring how they manifest in our daily lives.

Carrie Mae Weems' "The Kitchen Table Series" has not only made her career but also inspired a new generation of artists by presenting a confident woman of color on museum walls. Weems's ability to exude self-assuredness in her work is a testament to the power of embracing one's identity without the burden of societal stereotypes. This quote, "She finds pleasure and comfort with herself," underscores the importance of self-acceptance and comfort in one's skin. In my project, I seek to create a space where I can be comfortable with myself, free from external judgments and comparisons.

Ana Mendieta's call to disregard gender, race, and societal factors and instead connect with the shared humanity among us resonates deeply with my project's mission. In a world filled with distractions and idealized representations of life, it is easy to lose sight of our true selves. Mendieta's words inspire me to examine what life looks like without being influenced by external standards of perfection and success. I aim to capture the beauty of vulnerability and the authenticity of the self in my photographic journey.

I intend to take viewers on a personal exploration of self-representation and identity in a world filled with distractions. I want to create a safe space for introspection, a place where comparisons cease to exist, and one can be fully conscious of their true self. Inspired by Cindy Sherman, Carrie Mae Weems, and Ana Mendieta, I seek to document the beauty in everyday moments, finding solace in the mundane, and appreciating the unproductive days and mental breaks that make us human. Just as these artists challenged societal norms and embraced their identities, my project aims to do the same by embracing the journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance.
