The Oppositional Gaze - Bell Hooks

Q1 “Identification can only be made through recognition, and all recognition is itself an implicit confirmation of the ideology of the status quo.”

I think that this quote describes that when we identify or label something, we can only do so if we've seen or recognized it before. However, when we recognize things, we're essentially saying they fit with the way things normally are in society. So, identifying something is like saying it's part of the way things usually are, which can keep things the same as they've always been.

Q2 “Mainstream Feminist Film Criticism in no way acknowledges black Female Spectatorship. It does not even consider the possibility that women can construct an oppositional gaze via an understanding and awareness of the politics of race and racism.”

This quote expresses that traditional feminist film criticism doesn't recognize or consider how Black women watch and interpret movies. It doesn't even think about the idea that women can develop a unique perspective by understanding the racial issues and discrimination that exist. It's pointing out that mainstream feminist film research often ignores the experiences and viewpoints of Black women, especially when it comes to how they see and react to movies in relation to race.

                                               Understanding Patriarchy - Bell Hooks

Q1 “This rule of silence is upheld when the culture refuses everyone easy access even to the word "patriarchy “.

Anyone who has ever felt that an important topic is not openly discussed in their culture or community can relate to this quote. It's like when people avoid discussing something, making it difficult to even bring it up in conversation.

Q2 “To truly address male pain and male crisis we must as a nation be willing to expose the harsh reality that patriarchy has damaged men in the past and continues to damage chem in the present. “

The importance of this quote is that it highlights the need for society to recognize that men can also be negatively affected by traditional gender roles and expectations. Acknowledging that the system of patriarchy has harmed men in the past and continues to do so today, opens the door to addressing and helping men who may be going through difficult times or facing crises.

John Berge -Ways of seeing CH. 2&3

Q1 “The reciprocal nature of vision is more fundamental than that of spoken dialogue.”

When it comes to understanding things, such as seeing something and talking about it, the way we see things and how our vision works is more important or necessary than how we communicate with one another.

Q2“Perspective makes the single eye the centre of the visible world.”

This quote means that our point of view or perspective makes us see the world as if everything revolves around us like we're at the center of everything we can see. It's like when you look at something, it seems most important to you because it's in your line of sight, even though there's a whole world beyond that. So, it's saying that our view of things can make us feel like we're the most important part of what we can see.

Ana Mendieta NYTimes

Q1 "It is important to really just present the artists with their portraits and then let visitors make the comparisons themselves."

Ms. Vischer highlights how showing artists their own work and allowing visitors to make their own judgments is crucial. It encourages a fair and unbiased assessment of art, where people can decide what they like without any external influence. Ultimately, it promotes a more genuine and open appreciation of artwork.

Q2 “They created a shift, a change in perspective, from being the model, the person a painter is looking at, to being the painter herself.”

This quote talks about a big change in how Anna sees and uses art. Instead of just being the person who's painted, she becomes the one doing the painting. This change means they're not just looking at art but making it themselves, and it's like she found a new way to express herself through art. The shift in roles is an important and meaningful thing in her life.
