Revisiting Carrie
Mae Weems’s Landmark “Kitchen Table Series”
Q1: “Life unfolds like a story, with each scene
reflecting our experiences and relationships.” I chose this quote because I feel that is relatable and it
expresses that our lives are like books with chapters, each of which represents
our experiences and the people we have relationships with. People can relate to
this idea because they, too, have seen their lives unfold through unique
chapters, much like a story. This viewpoint encourages people to find meaning
and purpose in their lives, focusing on the importance of the connections they
make and the events they encounter. It highlights the idea that each moment
adds to the overall story of our existence. Q2: “A single person's story can resonate with people
from all walks of life.” I chose this quote because I believe that we all can
identify with this concept because they have probably been moved or inspired by
stories that included common topics like love, loss, resiliency, or success. It
becomes a reminder that despite our differences, our similarities can be a
source of unity and compassion. In the end, it connects with the idea that
stories can overcome separations and deeply unite people. On photography by
Susan Sontag Q1: "Photographs really are experience captured,
and the camera is the ideal arm of consciousness in its acquisitive mood."
This quote shows that pictures are like time capsules for
our memories. They're like a special way to keep important moments in our
lives. I picked this quote because I really agree with it. The reason is that I
live in a dormitory far from my family and friends right now. To feel more
connected to them and remember the good times we've had, I decorate my dorm
room with pictures that remind me of those happy moments. It helps me feel
better and closer to my loved ones, even though we're far apart. Q2 :"Humankind lingers unregenerately in Plato's
cave, still reveling, its age-old habit, in mere images of the truth." This quote implies that many people tend to stay within
their comfort zones, relying on familiar views of the world rather than looking
into a deeper understanding. I selected this quote because I've recognized my
own tendency to stay in my comfort zone, and it's something I'm actively trying
to change. I understand that personal growth requires change, and this quote
serves as a reminder for me to explore different perspectives and gain a deeper
understanding of things.
NY Times: How
Carrie Mae Rewrote The Rules Of Image ~ Making Q1: “This Marginalization, being categorized as “black
artist” or “woman artist” rather than simply artist, is something Weems has dealt
with her entire career. I chose this quote because her journey reminds us that,
while society may try to define us, our true artistic essence breaks
categories. Weems' work is a piece of voices, an exciting artwork created with
the threads of her unique perspective, demonstrating that art knows no
boundaries - only boundless potential. Q2: “I was also deeply concerned about the lack of
representation of African-American Women generally” I feel that this quote pushes us to be the change, to give
more importance to voices that have been long silenced, and to build a society
where representation is not a difficulty. By acknowledging this issue, we are
motivated to speak up, act, and work hard to make sure that every woman, every
person, and every group of people has a voice in the story of every one of us. |
