“We only see what we look at. To look is an act of choice.”
This quote is one of my favorites, it is so true and I agree with this statement. Our intentions are influenced by our conscious decisions when we perceive things. Sometimes when we look at things that we know that are going to affect us but we just do it and later blame ourselves, but at the end of the day it was our choice we let it control/affect us.
“If the new language of images were used differently, it would, through its use, confer a new kind of power.”
I agree with the statement because it emphasizes that images are an effective tool for communication and expression, with the potential to have a side view effect on society and culture.
Bell Hooks Understanding Patriarchy
“A great majority of individuals enforce an unspoken rule in the culture as a whole char demands we keep the secrets of patriarchy, thereby protecting the rule of the father. This rule of silence is upheld when the culture refuses everyone easy access even to the word "patriarchy.”
The idea of culture avoiding patriarchal conversations is difficult. The amount of discussion varies according to cultural, social, and individual settings. However, sometimes silence doesn’t get us anywhere, I believe if they speak up at the moment, the conversation of patriarchy could encourage and help understanding and there maybe could be a change.
“We need to highlight the role women play in perpetuating and sustaining patriarchal culture so that we will recognize patriarchy as a system women and men support equally, even if men receive more rewards from that system.”
I really like this quote because recognising that systems of patriarchy may be maintained by both men and women is critical even though men benefit from it more. However, what needs to be highlighted and encouraged is women to speak up or converse towards gender equality.
Bell Hooks Oppositional Gaze
“While every black woman I talked to was aware of racism, that awareness did not automatically correspond with politicization, the development of an oppositional gaze.”
I really like this quote because racism awareness does not always result in opposition. Responses of individuals to racism differ depending on their personal experiences, beliefs. It depends on the person and also the society that they live in and where it happens. However, racism still exists either because of your color or where you come from.

“Even when representations of black women were present in film, our bodies and being were there to serve to enhance and maintain white womanhood as object of the phallocentric gaze.”
I like how we talked in class about male and female gaze because it gave me an idea and made me understand it more. I agree with this quote because we had a discussion about it, however, the representation of Black women in film has a long history of stereotypes and problematic portrayals, sometimes spreading negative stereotypes.
Male gaze: The male gaze is a sexualized image of women, how he sees it and how he objectifies them by their sexual desires.
Female gaze: The female gaze is how womens be looking at each other, could be sexual desire.
Oppositional gaze: The oppositional gaze refers to Black women's critical and resistant gaze mostly in the media.
Female Gaze: Art that Looks at What Women See
“Decidedly I am too nervous to make anyone else sit for me.”
I like this quote because she is like those artists who prefer or feel comfortable doing their own work in their life or which they’ve been through. She decided to use her mother and sister as her models and created and presented an image based on her situation or whatever she went through.
Ana Mendieta: Artist Who Pushed Boundaries
“My art is the way I reestablish the bonds that tie me to the universe.”
This quote is my favorite because I like how she makes connections with things she saw or happened around her and she implies it through her art. In my opinion this is a strong and creative quote.
