Week 1 Quote and Selfie

                                                                             Worried

Susan Sontag excerpt from On Photography

Quote 1
“To photograph is to appropriate the thing photographed. It means putting oneself into a certain relation to the world that feels like knowledge -- and, therefore, like power.”
The images we take are very important in our life because it helps us overcome the disappointments that we face everyday. We use images to create meaning and understand the world we see and the ability to look at things differently. In addition to memories and little details in our life. I remember once I lost my phone and I realized later that the backup was not on and I was trying to do the impossible to get those images back because it has almost all my memories but unfortunately I couldn’t. Photographs basically everything.
Quote 2
“To collect photographs is to collect the world.”
This quote really caught my attention because we have to appreciate photographs. Yes, collecting photographs is to collect the world. A Photograph's moments help us to return to it later on and check our own perceptions, and ask ourselves why we feel that this person in the image is worth keeping them and why when we look back we really focus on even the very little details and that’s why we appreciate photographs.

NY Times: How Carrie Mae Weems Rewrote the Rules of Image-Making

Quote 1
“I was also deeply concerned about the lack of representation of African-American women generally."
This quote really caught my attention because even from what Carrie went through and how hard it was, she consistently demonstrates genuine care and empathy towards others.
Quote 2
“We also both shared a sense that our very presence in the world, as human beings who were also black, demanded that we live lives and make work that somehow made a difference, that left the world transformed in some way, and that visualized a piece of that world that was uniquely ours and that participated in a larger cultural conversation inside of the medium of photography”.
I choose this quote because you can tell that she wants to be heard which means she uses her art to represent her as a black woman and make a difference. She creates art that emphasizes the worth of black women in both art and life.

Revisiting Carrie Mae Weems’s Landmark “Kitchen Table Series”

Quote 1
“I think it’s very important that as a Black woman she’s engaged with the world around her; she’s engaged with history, she’s engaged with looking, with being. She’s a guide into circumstances seldom seen.”
I love how she was true to herself and brave to show that they exist. Carrie Has an important role in knowing the world around her, history, and her experiences since they act as guides into often unexplored circumstances. In addition to that she wants to show who she is and what she represents through her art.
Quote 2
“I think that most work that’s made by Black artists is considered to be about Blackness”.
Back in history black people needed to be heard and wanted to have equal rights just like whites. Later on, lots of black artists started to do and create art that represents their race such as Carrie.
