- Quote 1: "Photographs furnish evidence. Something we hear about, but doubt, seems proven when we're shown a photograph of it". (Sontag 6). When I read this quote I felt it really related to each and everyone one of us in life. As we discussed in class, back in the day we didn't have smart phones like we do today to capture every moment that was special to us, we just had our memories and stories. This plays a huge roll in the crime we have today. For example, police brutality, without bystanders capturing every moment of it individuals wouldn't get the justice they need because there's no "proof" of the matter.
- Quote 2: "The first cameras, made in France and England in the early 1840s, had only inventors and buffs to operate them. Since there were then no professional photographers, there could not be amateurs either, and taking photographs had no clear social use; it was a gratuitous, that is, an artistic activity." (Sontag 9). I believe this is a great way to highlight the struggles of social media pictures in todays world. Influencers are causing body dysmorphia in todays most used socials medias such as instagram and tik tok because they don't just use these outlets to have fun they always make sure everything about what they post are on point. Making other people feel like they aren't as good.
How Carrie Mae Weems Rewrote the Rules of Image-Making
- Quote 1: "I was also deeply concerned about the lack of representation of African-American women generally.” I decided to pull this quote because I love and appreciate how even though carrie has blown up she still shows her concern for the people around her. she seems like she has stayed true to herself and rooted. (Weems 21).
- Quote 2: “Men put me down as the best woman painter. I think I’m one of the best painters.”(Weems 9). I dont think its talked about enough how condescending belittling it is for a man to tell a women that she cant do something that they are doing . The author distinctively stated MEN underestimate her. Not that the world underestimates her, so for it to be mostly men that doubt her and she proved them wrong and became such a famous photographer is a well deserved slap in the face.
Carrie Mae Weems’s Landmark “Kitchen Table Series”
- Quote 1: "But it was also a seminal moment for Black representation in art, influencing an entire generation of artists who rarely saw their own selves reflected back on museum walls." (Weems 5). I really enjoyed how Weems is using her art to speak for those who believe their voice is unheard or overlooked. However she makes it known that her work is diverse and it doesn't only speak for one race because the piece is not about race it just brings to light the experiences of a black woman.
- Quote 2: "“This woman can stand in for me and for you; she can stand in for the audience, she leads you into history. She’s a witness and a guide,”" (Weems 8). Emphasizing the important role a woman can have in the world today is essential to implement because to this ay we are still underestimated because of our gender. Yet without us there's no telling what would all apart.
