The Cindy Sherman Effect
The art world was ready for something new, something beyond painting. A group of mostly women to be the ones to sort of take that on, partly because they felt excluded from the res of the (male) art world, and thought, "Nobody is playing with photography. Lets take that as our tool
She made it seem possible, and she also took photography and helped make it not the redheaded stepchild. She played a lion’s share in the crossover of photography as fine art.”
Response: Cindy Sherman did it for the women who thought they couldn't do it. I like how she pushed against the "social norms"
Ugly Beauty
Sherman herself is reluctant to discuss the meaning of her work; she is amused by the interpretive frenzy it provokes.
“It’s really this kind of contract with Cindy and the viewer, that the viewer will suspend disbelief and go with her.”
Response: In this article you got to see more of who Cindy is outside of her work. It made me understand why she gravitated to "cross dressing" or wanting to be someone else. Besides that her work spoke for itself. She didn't need to have words or explain her process. Her work spoke louder than her words ever would.
