THE CINDY SHERMAN AFFECT
Quotes: "where you can be anything you want to be any minute of the day, and artists are responding to that. "
"And by limiting her subject matter strictly to herself, while at the same time excavating countless permutations, she inspired a generation of younger artists to explore their own identities across a range of mediums."
UGLY BEAUTY
Quotes: " It was easy to erase myself and put on somebody else’s face and say"
"“I’m fixated on the thin eyebrow ... in a world of picture perfect perfection she’s given up. This is her subtle rebellion.”
The first two quotes I have chosen is from the article, "THE CINDY SHERMAN AFFECT" and I have chosen these two quotes in particular due them being relatable in a way. With the first quote, I felt as if it was a response to my own generation and how we always try to be prefect or to be something were not in a span of less than a minute. To add on I like how within the paragraph of this quote, it showcases how social media caused a great shift in photographers having them change their style to accommodate for the new tech savvy world we are living in. As for the second quote, I found it intriguing on how Ms. Sherman was ahead of her time as most people my age effortlessly tries to delegate each of our photos to being ourselves. In Sherman's case, she intentionally limit herself to self-portraits to challenge herself. Many imitate others for validation while Sherman does it to tell a story.
The second two quotes are from the article, "UGLY BEAUTY", and I chose these quotes due to them having some truth to them. Yes, Sherman herself said that she felt the need to erase herself and put on a face that not hers, but I know many personally who does the same. As stated in the previous paragraph, many seek validation and erase their true selves to seek instant gratification from others. Leading into the second quotes, many created a perfect image or life or what not that many try to follow with no avail. Due to social media, many believe they need luxury to be happy or that they need to be rich to be happy but that is far from the truth. I like the idea of Sherman challenging perfection but yet showing an ugly beauty(no pun intended) within her artwork.
